mixed feelings and dhal

not to be confused with roald dahl the author.  poor spelling abilities.  cest moi.

i have fallen victim to picture apps.  its a slippery slope that began with pixlr-o-matic that i downloaded to my home computer.  ridiculously easy to use, save and share.

then it was a fancy phone that takes reliably focused pics.

then i remembered id seen a post on "phoneography" which i do not believe is art.  neither is instagram.  or fb.  and generally half of flickr is crap.  but i digress.

and i sold out.  and downloaded instagram.  and picframe.  and diptic.

and i made delicious lentil curry.

adapted [very] loosely from australian women's weekly "new curries" cookbook

mixed dhal
3 T butter
1 shallot, diced
1 T chopped garlic
1" ginger, peeled and chopped
1 T mustard seeds
1 T cumin
1 T hot madras curry powder
1 teas chipotle chile pepper

in large saucepan, melt butter and saute shallot and garlic until translucent.  add spices and cook until pungent

remaining ingredients:
2 cups brown lentils
2 cups water or broth
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can kidney beans
1 can light coconut milk

add lentils, water, and tomato, mix and admire how much it looks like curdled sick.  simmer covered 30-40 min or until lentils are tender - stir occasionally and ensure lentil water is not flooding the stove.  drain and rinse beans, add to pot along with coconut milk.  if youre like me and intentionally buy low sodium or "no salt added" canned goods this will taste like crap.  add a good portion of table salt [the kind with the iodide not the overpriced dehydrated ocean flakes]

serve with rice.  to like 8 people.
