liz's laundry

  • dress: thrifted
  • skirt: dkny
  • tights and belt: target
  • blazer and dress: thrifted
  • leggings: uniqlo heattech
  • sweater/shirt/top: kohls
  • scarf: h&m
  • skirt: old navy
so first pic..i wore a dress over a skirt.  and thank god i did cos the office was freezing and the dress is really light polyester [oh the 70s] and the skirt is heavy cotton.  there was nearly a fire with all the static [tights as well] but i endured.  due to the overly bright green i have my eyes closed in the last pic.  thats also why im linking up to tammy of silverstyle's trending through the decades.  also linking up to meagan of brass in pocket's thursdays are for thrifters cos 2/3 of the outfits are from goodwill.

  • black lace top: victoria's secret
  • green tank: rainbow
  • black skinny pants: h&m
  • skirt and blazer: thrifted
  • top: forever21
  • belt: h&m
  • top: macys
  • tank: charlotte russe
  • skinny jeans: gap
i finally redid my green nails.  and welp.. after about an hour id chipped two of them.  sitting on the futon.  and then this morning i sliced my favorite [middle] finger open and the resulting bandaid took off both the sparkle and clear polish.  i guess i need a better topcoat.
  • sweater and scarf: thrifted
  • tank: h&m
  • black pants: kohls
linking up to patti of not dead yet style's visible monday - the [very subtle] pattern mixing with the skirt and bright colors made me feel quite visible!  but i now temp in a cubicle.  sooo not actually visible.

updating dresses

both in the i-havent-posted-real-things-in-awhile sense and cos the dresses were possibly from the 1970's.

anywho.  these were purchased over the last few week and either the pics have been on my computer or the unfinished product has been hanging next to my tv.  proceed:

overly elegant polyester maxi dress.. turned into a daytime dress with removable double peplum.  the glorified belt covers a sizable snag that i guess was there when i bought it [didnt notice] and unfortunately, the right pocket.  i wore this for st patrick's day celebrations [a potluck at a friend's house] aaand since were old, we were home by 12:30.  no carousing at crazy irish bars.  but when they have to put out portapotties to accommodate all the partiers [in maine of all places].. i am more than happy to go home.
matronly puff sleeves were removed and braided into a belt.  as i was sewing the arm holes closed again i ran out of bobbin thread so there was swearing.. but otherwise a very simple fix
 removed sleeves.  fin.
oh eddie bauer.  you keep making these almost-updated dresses but they still have that slightly out-of-decade feel.  5" later.. much better.  i'll have to figure out the right placement for the under-boob seam cos in both pics its a bit wrong.  the fabric is surprisingly stretchy for rayon and shifts around a bit
last but not least..yet another blue and white print dress, and i'm not sure how much better the end product really is...  i unpicked the inside poof in the sleeves, cut off the weird cuffs, and sewed around the faux wrap top to tack down the flappy facing layer.  after trying it on again i decided knee-length would be better than just under so i turned the bottom hem up once and sewed a double seam.

it was a good day

a direct quote from my grammie.  and welp it was.  the one negative: apparently i havent been eating enough bananas [or water maybe] and got the beginnings of an ubercharleyhorse while at the gym.  so i left.  before i had an actual serious cramp and fell off the elliptical or something.

no sewing updates.  in the midst of several refashions and after spring cleaning tomorrow [which may extend into the week depending on how thoroughly i do my closet] i will knuckle [or buckle] down and finish something.

but the positives:

liz's laundry

spotted:  the rare jeans + tshirt combo cavorting in the wild.  and/or going to drop off recycling..
  • cardi: thrifted
  • shirt: body central
  • jeans: gap
  • shirt: esprit
  • tank and grey skinny pants: h&m
the above outfit was worn on the first 70 degree day in march in maine...probably ever.  we scampered about like children in the nearby park and played frisbee and volleyball until it was too dark to see.  unfortunately, i suck at volleyball.  i blame the lighting in the pic lest i look like whiney-mcwhinerson.  but in real life..it looks like my hand is rotting.  bruises be damned.  i'm turning into a zombie.

  • dress: macys [bought by the mums so technically not breaking my shopping ban]
  • tights: target

green stuff for st pats

sally hansen xtreme wear "going green" with ulta matte tips

lemon vodka cupcakes with green dye and key lime curd filling

sooo good.  srsly.

aaand my $4 plant was absurdly ridiculously rootbound and pretty much suffocating itself.  2 bags of potting soil, a trashbag full of roots, and another pot later... i cut apart the plant with a butter knife and repotted.  there was a tiny bit extra that fit in a 3" pot so i technically now have 3 plants.  but i'll probably forget about 2 and they'll die...and i'll be back to one.  until then they are seemingly healthy and survived the night in my 75 degree apartment

meyer lemon & key lime curds

curd is such a horrid word.  just the sound of it makes you think of sour chunks of dairy product.  but this is lemon pudding sauce filling semi-gel stuff.  infinitely better than gone-off milk and comparably as awesome as wisconsin cheese curds.

other thrift goodies

thrift the rainbow.  then let it hang dry in the bathroom...

from scratch and the old thrift-fix

i thrifted an "esp - extra sure pattern" from goodwill for $.50 [victory #1] and spent over an hour and half cutting out the pieces.  now i just want to point out as america has gained weight, our clothing sizes have changed.  and ummm the pattern was just 1" too small at each measurement.  oh well.

i took this pic when i thought i was 90% done [ie facing and shoulders complete, waist and sides sewn together].  another 1.5 hours after finishing cutting pieces.  in between pics i bought new lightbulbs [daylight instead of warm] and figured out how to better dry my poufy hair
little did i know, i would decide weeeell maybe more like 75% done.  i bias-taped [is that a word?] the arm holes after making them ever so slightly larger, cut off a few more inches from the hem, and added [then removed and resewed] hooks in place of the buttons since as i mentioned, it was a wee bit too small.

oh yea.  and i added pockets.  AWESOME friggin pockets.  the other pic is just to show more of my mad gathering skills even though theyre mostly hidden by the damn collar.
based very loosely on this pin:

for magical sewing piece #2 [also a victory] i have here a dark teal eddie bauer size small ponte awkward midi dress with a stain and a slit.  compare that if you will to the unknown brand size 16 petite.  i digress.  [though it is microsuede and $2.50 worth of amazing]
honestly beyond my stand-by of chopping of the bottom i was a bit at a loss of what to do.  so i looked up over-priced under-sized [is a large really an 8-10 you fuckers?] dresses on modcloth.  and found this little sold-out gem

so i busted out my gathering skills yet again and made a triple peplum.  which to my chagrin i recently found is pronounced pep-lum.  not pea-plum.  eeeeh.
this pic is to show how it goes from the side seam to the random off-set front seam

this pic is to show the dress from a more flattering angle.
