garden update

whilst on my last foray to home depot [lovingly referred to as home despot amongst friends], i bought a burpee ultimate growing system. long winded remarks aside...i sold out. since most of my paper pots rotted from too much watering with the weird expanding soil pellets, i needed a guaranteed way to germinate my planties in time for planting after the last frost free day.

and it fucking worked!!! with the clear lid and the whole setup in morning sun, the bok choi sprouted in 2 days. this picture is exactly a week from planting. i thought the basil was molding and had a small conniption, only to realize it was sprouting!

equally as amazingly...the sprouts i replanted in mold-free newspaper are surviving thus far. my tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers are still doing quite poorly. i may have to give in and buy actual plants from a gardening store.

on my revised garden plan i added a burning bush and a forsythia. but lo and behold...

a whole hedge of it! next the driveway! who knew?! i hacked the shit out of this hedge last fall with inappropriate gardening tools, but it survived and im pretty sure grew during the winter. the horribly overgrown bush in the back yard is also gaining a yellow hue and im 95% sure it too is forsythia!

aaand that is more than enough exclamation points.

south shore moriches

ive been told that the "good" parts of LI are north of 25a and south of 80. that means i technically live on the wrong side of the tracks.. but whos really paying attention. i was however, pleasantly surprised to see this view from a deadend in moriches.

i dont know if it was center east north upper old or whatever moriches. ...it was somewhere in southern brookhaven.

unfortunately it was cloudy, but the water was sparkling clear

conveniently, i had my tripod with me and macguivered it to the guardrail. i was trying to smile for a decent picture when a truck pulled up to the deadend and just sat there creeping. so i took my one picture, uneven leggings and all, and fled to my car.
  • dress: dkny outlet
  • leggings: forever 21
  • shoes: crocs [yea i know. foamy plastic shoes. eff off.]

frank, pie, yaks???

here is the most disjointed picture-happy post to date.

since the roomies consume a ridic amount of tuna.. it turns out frank downs bowls of tuna juice [?] about every other day. this is a good action shot.

they put the bowl on a table to see if he would reach for it.

yea he did. and since hes a cat and does the crazy bowl tongue lapping thing...he also left a tuna spray on the table. i send praise to whoever invented lysol/clorox wipes.

last night i made a chocolate pudding pie! i crumbled some extra oreos on top for artistry and while the pudding was still hot, i added some 80% cocoa dark chocolate i found on our shelf. it cut quite a bit of the sickeningly sweetness of the pudding...which allows one to eat more than the normal amount of pie.

extreme crust closeup

there is about 1/8th of the pie left. 24 hours later. WOOOO PIE

on my travels throughout LI i saw this guy today.

is it a yak? or some kind of bison? or just a really huge obscure type of cow ive never heard of or seen before even though i originate from the farming midwest [iowa]?

the rest of the yaks within their unsturdy-looking fence/pen thinger

i passed this tree nursery for about 2 miles straight. i would assume it covers about half of eastport but im not exactly clear on where i was. regardless..i like the juxtaposition of the old deciduous tree with the baby pines.

aaaaand it turns out the frankenstein wants to go traveling as well. or hes just a weirdo cat and likes how non-floor things feel on his furry butt.

a seal, a piano, & oscar's of st james

after work on friday i went to the music building of stony brook to meet up with the sister. this little guy reminded me of an article i read about russia banning the practice of seal slaughter. and i figured i needed a pretentious artsy shot of the fluffy thing.

i also came across one of these. which for the life of me would not focus in macro, reminded me of my childhood and is called....something somethingerator.

for dinner, leah and i went to oscar's of st james. since it was smithtown restaurant week last week, we ate with the rest of us plebians instead of the usual crowd. and unlike some douchebags, we tipped the appropriate amount instead of 5% cos it "wasnt enough food."

from the tapas menu, i had the buffalo tostada [very rich but inspired me to buy ground buffalo meat at the grocery store next trip], fried smoked calamari with thai dipping sauce [delicious spicy sauce, calamari rings are fine but the tentacles, while crisp and tasty, definitely weird me out], oven roasted chorizo with onion compote [not an onion fan, but an avid chorizo fan], and moroccan merguez wrapped in potato chips [lamb was also very rich and the potato chips were a very interesting complement, although i spent most of my eating wondering how they were wrapped but still crunchy]

the pic is a little dark as i didn't want the flash to blind everyone in the restaurant. on the left is the chorizo and the right is the merguez. in all i had the real man's meat dinner [meat with a side of meat] and it was a bit too rich, although delectable. i had the berry dessert [mini raspberry napoleon, pannacotta w/ blueberries, and strawberry sorbet] as i felt a molten chocolate cake, hot chocolate milk w/ cookie, and a chocolate truffle would have put me into a food coma under the table right then and there. as it was, i went home after, donned sweatpants, and then rolled around on the couch for awhile like a trussed turkey.

that being said, after i get a raise at work [not holding my breath], we will return to oscars. or more likely during restaurant week next year.

leah had grilled octopus with warm fingerling potatoes, frisee, and orange aiole viniagrette; scallop crusted salmon [minus the scallops] with sunchoke cream, fingerling potatoes, pearl onions, asparagus, and shallots [pic below]; and apple beignets with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream

im hungry now...

domo and a weird outfit

domo, the mascot of a japanese tv station, has a hilarious back story and multiple fansites. leah bought me a domo and he visits various places around my bedroom but has not yet left the house on any crazy adventures.

in other news, i wore a kind of odd outfit the other day and realized why old navy had to switch to "super modelquins". their clothes really dont fit people that move.

  • necklace: pac sun [$2 clearance!]
  • dress: old navy
  • sweater: dkny
  • jeans: gap clearance
i hardly buy anything full price. fuck yea. and um i had some problems with my selftimer. the sister wasnt home to take a pic of me so i attached my sweet gorillapod to the treadmill. here is another picture that resulted. i like how my crazy face is also in the mirror. oops.
