oyster fest

every year the town of oyster bay [specifically the village] throws a 2 day event appropriately named oyster fest.  here are the gritty details:

200,000 people
30 food stands
90 craft stands
tall ships
pirates
bands
free transport from LIRR stations

after 4 years in long island i FINALLY made it to oyster fest.  and it was amazing.
the fairway full of screaming children
a mozza-repa.  2 arepas with mozz in the middle.  DELECTABLE.
pickle on a stick..  i also ate a steak sandwich, 1 1/2 ears of corn, and some pumpkin ravioli.  no oysters.  do. not. like.

i'm on a boat

unless you watch a lot of SNL or are under the age of 30...that title will make absolutely no sense.  its ok.  but i was.  on a boat.
pelicans guarding the drawbridge that separates manasota key from the mainland
some birds waiting for a sea cow to amble by
when youre rich enough to build a concrete seawall and 2-story screened-in outdoor pool with mini waterslide.. you can put out 8 adirondack loungers around a giant chessboard.  or you know, you could do something good.

naturific long island

when i think of LI i still conjure images of horrific traffic, jersey hair, and nasal accents. but it can be quite beautiful. honest. i still cannot be convinced a lifelong stay is in my future. but ill stay another 2 years.

animal footie prints in fresh concrete

sunset on the north shore

same sunset seen thru trees while descending the most terrifying stairs ever [holding beers]

public baseball field in massapequa

i hate birds. they are flying rats. disease carrying little beady eyed beggers. but goslings are fluffy and kind of adorable. while i was taking this though the mother was charging at me hissing. so i ran back to my car and sped away.

her baby flew badly
and squawked oh so madly
and momma flew away on a song

heron waits upon the beach
looks for snacks within his reach
watching fisher cast his line
seagulls yelling "mine mine mine"

red squirrel looks so scrawny

these aint calendar kittens

this kitten maybe weighs a pound. and has globby eyes. BUT IS SO FUCKING CUTE. even when it was being scolded by bob for drinking eye-cleaning solution it wobbled around the porch all fluffy and teeny

very homely momma kitty

i hope bob gets this kitten adopted. it is a blue/grey with white mittens and huge blue eyes...when theyre not crusted shut. if only i could be a crazy cat lady and keep all the stray kittens!!! but frank and my valued sanity keep me from falling into the inescapable land of cat rescue.

cold spring harbor

apparently the cold spring harbor laboratory is famous for research in biology, cancer, and neuroscience. i thought long island was only known for brookhaven lab and tesla lab [now for the low low prices of $1.6 million]. i was as it seems, misinformed.

regardless.

when the parents visited, we took a family trip to the cold spring harbor fish hatchery and aquarium. here are some photographic highlights. cos i like turtles. but not as much as this kid.

the spiny soft shell turtle is known for its general lack of...hard shell. however, it is less commonly known as the mean bully of the turtle tank and often pushes other turtles off their perch under the heat lamp.

very rare [and depressingly malformed] siamese terrapins

lily pond a la monet.

little end turtle has problems hanging on

lone turtle sitting
contemplating the water
thinking of haiku

swirling trout pool of DEATH. not nearly as creepy as the tank with year-old trout. packed in like..sardines

oh hai.

another flowering hedge

free [!] gladiolas from trader joe's

unbeknownst to most.. trader joe's is in fact a good place to find single men in their 20s-30s. they follow my sister around every trip

stray kitten with a beard

momma frankie is a bit scrawny looking

um kind of angry family. perhaps cos they want a home and a matching poppa frank?
